Welcome
to
Cañon City is located on U.S. Hwy 50 west of Pueblo, Colorado. The town sits at an elevation of 5,348 feet in the foothills of the Rockies. Nearest major airports are Denver International and Colorado Springs. The town was first organized by the Cañon City Claim Club on March 13, 1860. The Cañon City Claim Club was composed of six members who organized to develop coal, iron, gypsum, marble and granite mining in the area. Residents voted to name the settlement "Town of Canyon City" but the reporter for the meeting used the Spanish spelling "Cañon", thus the town became Cañon City. Cañon City is home to the Royal Gorge Canyon and the famous Royal Gorge Bridge which is said to be the world's highest suspension bridge, an amazing 1,053 feet above the Arkansas River. The town is a main gateway to recreation in the southern portions of the San Isabel National Forest and the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area which has 148-miles of the best river rafting and kayaking water in the nation. Cañon City Chamber of Commerce: The Cañon City Chamber of Commerce serves the town of Cañon City and surrounding area. They are an excellent source for information regarding the community and will provide assistance in planning your visit to the area.
